Maintaining Your PTO Shaft for Equipment Reliability

Regular cleaning and lubrication of your Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft help ensure its operational lifespan and prevent issues caused by dirt buildup and corrosion.

Cleaning the PTO Shaft

Dirt, grease, and debris accumulating on the shaft can affect operation. Follow these steps:

  1. Disassemble: Separate the male and female shaft components.
  2. Clean Exterior Surfaces: Remove loose dirt and old grease using a wire brush or cloth.
  3. Clean Interior (Female Section): Soak the outer tube in parts cleaner or diesel fuel to loosen hardened grease. After soaking, scrub the inside using a rag attached to a flexible rod or PVC pipe.
  4. Dry Components: Ensure all parts are dry before reassembly to prevent moisture problems.

Lubricating the PTO Driveline

Appropriate lubrication is necessary for driveline function.

  1. Grease Selection: Use an EP (Extreme Pressure) grease meeting NLGI grade 2 specifications.
  2. Application Points:
    • Universal Joints: Apply grease to each fitting until new grease emerges, displacing the old grease.
    • Telescoping Sections: Grease the sliding surfaces to maintain free movement.
    • Clean Fittings: Wipe grease zerks before applying lubricant to avoid forcing in dirt.
  3. Remove Excess: Wipe away surplus grease to minimize dirt attraction.

Maintenance Recommendations

  • Inspect Regularly: Check the shaft for wear, rust, or damage before operation.
  • Lubricate Periodically: Apply grease after every 8 hours of use or at minimum every 6 months.
  • Store Properly: Keep the shaft in a dry location, positioned to prevent water entry.
  • Safety Precaution: Always turn off the tractor and disengage the PTO before starting maintenance tasks.
